Hello Children's Convention!

A special HELLO from the Kennys and the Carlines
to the Children's Convention meeting this week in Atlantic Canada!

We are thrilled that you are all looking at our blog today as you learn about the work of Canadian Baptist Ministries in Kenya. We hope you have time to look back at the entries of the past year and to see a bit of what our family has been up to. If you have any questions or comments, post them on the blog and we will be sure to respond to them right away!

This is Eastleigh, a Somali ghetto in the city of Nairobi, Kenya. We work here with the Carline family helping Somali refugees who have fled the conflict in their home country. Together with the Carlines, we run a language school in the Eastleigh Fellowship Centre. This is a safe place for Somalis to learn to speak English, gain computer skills and participate in sports programs.

With most of our classes being filled with men, Erica has begun a Friday "Girls Time". It is nice for the women in our classes to get out of Eastleigh and to enjoy the freedom of being in a group without the pressure of so many guys around. They get together to improve their English, take part in special activities and to just have the pleasure of some"girl talk".

Hello Children's Convention! Thanks so much for all of your comments and questions.

First off--thank you for all the birthday wishes. I had a fun birthday party and my favorite present was a Barbie. I turned 6 on Aug. 16 but I was in school that day so I had a party today.

We live in Nairobi, the capitol city of Kenya. It is very busy here. There is a lot of traffic and air pollution. There are also some nice parks and many wild animals including giraffe. Preying mantuses eat other bugs but we don't think they bite people. Scorpions, cobras and the camel spider are another story!!

We live in an apartment and we really like it. Nairobi is different from Canada in that we don't have reliable water or electricity. We have been without water for almost a month (off and on) and we are writing you now by battery and candle light! We have a TV but we get no TV shows. We get one Kiswahili station that plays the news in Kiswahili. We rent movies and our friends in Canada send us some TV shows that we like on DVD.

We have about 150 students in our classes at the Eastleigh Centre. We teach them English. Most of our students would like to go to Canada , the United States or Europe.

Tristan and Emma both love to play games on the computer and their Nintendo DS. It is very hard for us to buy toys here because they are so expensive. Tristan and Emma both like to play football (soccer). They also play basketball. It is also too expensive to buy new cothes here so we go to an outside market and buy our clothes second- hand.

We are not sure when we will return to Canada for our first furlough because we are adopting a little girl and we can't travel until the adoption is complete. Sometimes an adoption can take up to two years. We are hoping to return to Canada the summer of 2009 or 2010.

Hello again.

This is Tristan. My favorite animal is a monkey. They are really funny and we can feed them here out of our hands. Sometimes we see them in the trees on our drive to school. What is your favorite animal?

I have two sisters, Emma and Ava. Emma is in grade one and Ava is just a baby. We are adopting her.

I love these family photographs of the Kennys and the Carlines. I hope someone, with more technical skills than I have, can download them for the Bulletin Board at the Church.
